Le Cavalier Noir at the Chess Piece Pâtisserie & Cafe

Image

Le Cavalier Noir at Chess Piece Cafe and PatisserieThis was almost too pretty to eat.

The Chess Piece Facebook page says of this dessert: “Le Cavalier Noir is a decadent cake made with layers chocolate sponge cake and praline royale (hazelnut and milk chocolate), enveloped in bittersweet dark chocolate mousse. The entire cake is glazed in dark chocolate, and garnished with our chocolate chess piece logo.

But the girl at the counter just said, “it’s CHOCOLATE“, managing to convey in one word that this was not just any chocolate, but the absolute pinnacle of chocolate-ness it is possible to achieve on Earth.

She was right.

Go eat one, now.

Best Coast Coffee Gallery

Beast Coast Coffee Gallery in Broad Cove, Nova ScotiaOn Highway 331 between Liverpool and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, there’s a tiny community called Broad Cove. We drive through it often when exploring the scenic South Shore, and every time we pass the Best Coast Coffee Gallery I say – out loud – “we’ve got to check that place out sometime.”

After a morning run on Crescent Beach last week, Gary pronounced that it was finally “sometime”. Running on the beach is hard work, and neither of us had eaten yet (although I was still full from the previous night’s Lobster Linguini at Magnolia’s Grill in Lunenburg, to be honest).

The Best Coast Coffee Gallery’s traditional building with its quintessentially South Shore decorations (brightly coloured Adirondack chairs are to the South Shore what flying the US flag in your yard is to Maine) just looks like a friendly place to stop. Continue reading

Mexico Lindo: An authentic favourite

Mexico Lindo's menuWhen we left Halifax in 2008, neither of us realised how much we would miss its vibrant culinary scene. Calgary and Fredericton both have some amazing restaurants, but there’s something special about the Halifax food scene. For a relatively small city, the breadth of ethnic choices and quality of the food in Halifax is astonishing.

There’s a high turnover (I still mourn the passing of the Ghanaian/Tanzanian restaurant), though, and I was delighted to find on our last trip that one of our favourites, Mexico Lindo, is still going strong. Continue reading

Lobster Roll: Magnolia’s Grill, Lunenburg

Magnolia's Grill Lobster RollIf you haven’t been to Magnolia’s Grill in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia yet (or at all), I’d suggest now is a good time. Not only is it a consistently great restaurant, but on my visit last week they had lobster rolls. Delicious, delicious, lobster rolls. Pair it with the Mussels a la Provence appetizer, and you’ve got a delicious maritime feast! Continue reading
