Intrigued by the buzz (and the promise of sugary deliciousness), I popped in recently for a business meeting and was delighted to find I’d stepped into a bright, sophisticated space – on looks alone, the Chess Piece cafe has carved out a distinct niche. Downtown Fredericton has several great cafes, but none quite as refined as this.
The lattes were good, and the macarons were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The atmosphere is vibrant with a steady stream of customers coming through, and the addition of reclaimed wood on the walls and in the tabletops gives the sophisticated space a welcoming feel.
I’m a cautious sort, not willing to deliver a verdict on a brand-new eatery based on one visit so close after opening day, but I will say that this is worth a visit! I’m curious to see how things go after the honeymoon period is over. I love the space, the lattes are good, and the staff are lovely, so I do hope it’s successful.
