LaHave Bakery, Nova Scotia

Leaving my mother’s cottage in East Port Medway, Highway 331 winds along the Lighthouse Route on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, whisking us past the green lawns and carefully tended flower gardens of rural homes set far back from the road, and occasionally opening up to allow a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocky shoreline.

Slowing down to 50 km/hr, we approach the small town of LaHave. The roads narrow, and houses come closer to the road, eventually perching right on the edge of the street. Parking is a challenge during the summer, but now, mid-May, we’re able to find a spot right in front of the LaHave Bakery.

What: LaHave Bakery

Where: LaHave, Nova Scotia (Lighthouse Route)

Recommended: Smoked salmon and capers on bagel; buy a loaf of their cheese and herb bread for later

You need to know: Like many great spots on the Lighthouse Route, parking can be a nightmare in the summer.

It’s a South Shore institution, bustling in the summertime with people picking up buns, bread, or sweets on their way to the nearby beaches. Today it’s low-key, which suits our temporarily child-free style.

Historic photos and artefacts adorn the inside eating area.

Stepping inside, the slightly yeasty smell announces the bakery. Handmade signs adorn the walls of the bakery, and above the till chalkboards display the menu for the adjoining cafe.

Gary orders the pulled pork burger, and I get my favourite: smoked salmon, capers & cream cheese on one of the bakery’s delicious bagels.

My meal is a tried-and-true standby, although Gary deems his pulled pork sandwich “good, but not a do-over.”

We’ll be back again, and I’ll let you know what Gary tries next time. I’ll be having the smoked salmon.

Have you been to the LaHave Bakery? What did you think?
